TankKitten 2: The Reckoning








This last weeks been pretty intense. I felt the need for a little cheerieness. It seems like it needs amusing captions but I'm hardly in the right mindset.

At what point would a kitten cease to be cute for you then? What if it was nestled in a pile of skulls? Sprawling among a cache of mustard gas shells? Eating a dead baby?

It's like this, I believe. The kitten is inherently cute. On a ten-point cuteness scale a kitten is usually at least a 9.75, whereas very few people (except perhaps Emmy) would put 'abandoned rusting Russian armament' and 'cute' in the same sentence. On the aforementioned cuteness scale the Russian tank would be a negative 15, at best. Thus, the juxtaposition of the two increases the relative cuteness of the kitten to an astonishing level. Plus the photos speak to the endurance of fragile life in the face of overwhelming odds. Kittens and skulls wouldn't do much for me on account of skulls rating pretty high on the poignancy scale, which would create a lot of background emotional clutter. As to dead babies, their introduction into a discussion is almost invariably a straw man argument.

Your analysis goes too far ;) Tanks don't fit into that cutiness scale at all. It's more like another dimension. It is the multi-dimensionality, not just the contrast on a single scale that plays. You might see tanks as beautiful things. Deadly beautiful if you will, but cute/not cute? Never ever, hehe. This one is abandoned though, which makes it fortunately a harmless pile of junk. Which it pretty much used to be. By the way, it does not look like a tank to me, it's an APC I guess, BRDM-2.
